Stewart Fleming Primary School
Location: London
Client: Walker Construction Ltd
BWP Role: Civil & Structural Engineering
Project Overview
Bellamy Wallace Partnership were appointed by Walker Construction Ltd to deliver civil and structural engineering services for the redevelopment and expansion of Stewart Fleming Primary School, part of the Pioneer Academy Trust.
The project included partial demolition of the existing school, construction of new single and two‑storey extensions, roof‑level external MUGA play areas, and refurbishment of existing facilities, all delivered within a live school environment.
Our Role
BWP provided structural and civil engineering services from design through to construction, including:
-
Superstructure and substructure design
-
Drainage and external works design
-
Temporary works input
-
Ongoing coordination with the design team and contractor
Structural Solution
The new buildings were designed as steel braced frames with composite concrete floors, supported on a combination of:
-
Reinforced concrete ground beams and pad foundations
-
Mass concrete strip footings
-
A suspended ground floor slab
This approach provided an efficient, adaptable and buildable solution suited to the operational and programme constraints of the project.
Key Considerations
-
Efficient design: Optimised structural layout to balance cost, programme and performance
-
Coordination: Close integration of structure and drainage using 3D modelling
-
Buildability: Design adapted during construction, including the use of contiguous piled walls to suit contractor methodology
-
Live environment: Careful phasing to allow construction alongside ongoing school operations
Outcome
The completed scheme provides modern teaching spaces and improved facilities, supporting the long‑term needs of the school.
This project demonstrates BWP’s strength in delivering practical, well‑coordinated engineering solutions, with a clear focus on collaboration and buildability.
